What is lip augmentation?

For many of us, full, younger looking lips are high on our wish list. Lip enhancement can be achieved in a number of ways through the use of dermal fillers. Special Hyaluronic acid fillers are used to replace the lost volume in your lips or to redefine your lip contours by injecting the fillers along the vermilion line (the line between your lips and the adjacent normal skin). It is also possible to improve the "Cupid's Bow" appearance of your lips by using dermal fillers in the fold that extends up towards the nose (philtrum ridges).

Hyaluronic acid fillers have robust clinical data spanning over 10 years to underpin its safety and effectiveness, with over 6 million treatments worldwide as further testimony.
Hyaluronic acid is found naturally throughout our bodies: in our skin, bones, joints, and eyes. It acts as a lubricant and moisturiser due to its ability to attract and store water.

Hyaluronic Acid is clinically produced, from plant bacterial, not from animal or human sources.

Are the effects immediate?

Yes

Does it hurt?

Most treatments are carried out with anaesthetics but as it is an injection, there maybe some discomfort or pain. A local anaesthetic is used to make the treatment as comfortable as possible. For treatments near the mouth, such as lip treatments the area is numbed with an injection which is similar to a dental anaesthetic.

Are there any side effects?

Many thousands of treatments have been carried out in the UK and even more around the world, with few serious or lasting side effects. Most people can return to their normal daily life immediately after the treatment. However, your practitioner will explain the possible side effects during the initial consultation. The most common side effects are related to the fact that you have had injections in the area being treated, - slight redness and mild swelling. Allergic reactions to dermal filler treatment are rare but can include: redness, itching, swelling, and hardness, or small bumps under the skin. These side effects may last for weeks or months and sometimes longer, fortunately they are very rare. If you have a history of cold sores, dermal filler treatment in that area might cause them to break out again. Your practitioner may recommend anti-viral cream (Zovirax) immediately after the treatment and for a few days afterwards, to reduce the possibility of a recurrence.

How long does it last?

The results can last for 6 months or more, with the average first treatment lasting about 9-12 months. After this time, the lines starts to gradually form again as the filler is naturally broken down by your body.

Who can carry out the treatments?

Only health professionals should carry out these procedures - pharmacists, nurses, doctors and dentists. Do not go to anyone who is not medically qualified

What are the risks?

Hyaluronic acid fillers have a very good safety profile which is why we make it our first choice in dermal fillers. There is a very small risk of allergy which is why you must ensure that you see a medically qualified practitioner.

Who cannot have the treatment?

You should not have dermal fillers if:
- you are pregnant or breast feeding
- you are on antibiotics
- you have a known allergy to dermal fillers
- you have a bleeding or clotting disorder

You will be advised individually if you have active acne or broken skin or are prone to cold sores.
